Number: Puzzle #394
Genre: Platform
Author: Bram
Appeared at: August 8, 2007
Tricky, tricky. This one took me much longer than it should have, although the whole genre is like that! Quite an interesting genre, once you understand the rules anyway. I liked the somewhat unexpected construction in a part of this puzzle, although it threw me off so much that I must have tried every other sensible construction...

This puzzle (and a few others) suffer from a gap in the rules, which should probably be made explicit.
Namely, that a column without a number at the bottom has an unknown number of posts and a column without a number at the top has an unknown number of chains.
I have spent a fair bit of time with this and other puzzles boxing myself into a no-win solution on the assumption that no number meant zero, and it wasn't until I eventually did a 'reveal' that I saw there was a basic puzzle rule that I hadn't picked up on.
Suggestion: Update the instructions to make this explicit!

It is almost universal on this site that the lack of a clue means that the clue could be anything. However, in this genre it might be a bit trickier to see than usual, since not all columns have an available floor/ceiling, so I clarified it in the longer version of the rules (after you click "More Information")

Brilliant - thanks, fl0rrat.
I agree with your reasoning - often doesn't need stating, but in this case it is a bit less obvious.
