Things are not completely consistent with the battleship puzzles. This has to do with how the numbers on the side work when a row (or column) is split in several blocks. For instance, in this puzzle: http://www.puzzlepicnic.com/puzzle?14 the middle row is split in two blocks of length three. The two '2's next to it, tell there are two parts in one of the block of three and also two parts in the other block of three.
On the other hand, in this puzzle: http://www.puzzlepicnic.com/puzzle?319 the top row is split in two blocks of four, but here, the '4' on the side does not mean there are four parts in the right block, but these four parts are divided over the two blocks.
Maybe it is handy to introduce different notations for the two cases?
