I think it's too easy for a 4-stars puzzle.

I have the same opinion. The puzzle is really nice, but worth only 2 or 3-stars.

I might be missing something simple then, as I still don't see the way to simply get there.

A little bit a late reaction, five years after publishing the puzzle, but I recently started to enjoy the Star Battle puzzles.

I really like the design of this particular puzzle: I always enjoy it when puzzles are not only fun to solve but also beautiful to look at. Were the "1", "2", "3" and "4" meant to be hints? (as in, start with "1", then proceed to "2" etc?)

I have to agree with the other comments that this puzzle is rather easy for a four-star puzzle, I have encountered much harder three-stars. Although I didn't get there without any bifurcating: I started with the "1", in which the placement of one star is obvious, as are three squares which can't contain any stars. Then there are only two squares left in the "1" for the remaining star: I tried one of the two, which lead to a situation that could easily be solved by pure logic.

Now I solved this again, and it seems that Jeroen's approach was essentially the same. I marked the two possible places with a red and a green star and proceeded from them simultaneously. It flowed very smoothly from there and eventually the green led into contradiction, so the red ones were correct.
So that one bifurcation was needed unlike in the recent nyancharov's puzzle I mentioned. But quite easy one.
