What does the colon operator mean in this context? Is it defining a ratio? If so, how does that work?

The only way I can interpret it is something like 15 : 5 = 3, but that is just division, so why isn't the division operator being used?

I think that indeed it means EGAA / BA = DE, but I didn't care to solve again (resolve!) now.

It is used as a division operator in this puzzle indeed. I remember we used to denote division like this in elementary school.

Thanks - I have just completed it and can confirm, it means divide.

Interestingly, it turns out the puzzle is solvable without that operator, so actually the point is a bit moot!
