Very clever - and great fun!

Not sure I've seen a non-digit version of this before, but it works well - particularly using a meaningful phrase like this.

Quite difficult to design, I suspect...

Wow, I agree, a very elegant puzzle, great concept to use a beautiful quote instead of numbers.

Thanks!

I originally set out to determine whether the digits of pi could form a valid puzzle, but then realized I didn't have to limit myself to numbers. It was new to me, but if I understood edderiofer's judgement correctly, he has seen sentences before.

Valid sentences become increasingly rare as the grid gets larger, so I felt very lucky to have stumbled upon this one. Did you know that 'hitori' translates to 'alone' or 'one person'?

Very beautiful puzzle, I love the idea of inserting a quote - it's just a great idea.

Yes, that is correct. Specifically, @Jack_L_Lance on Twitter has made five of these! (One of them is a Futari, where there may be two unshaded copies of each letter in each row or column, and another is on his blog.)
