Hi there,
I was trying to come up with some new puzzles, but I cannot seem to get studio working. It probably had something to do with java. How do I get things working again?

Puzzling has been updated to html 5 years ago. Unfortunately, the studio didn't get updated, and you indeed still have to use java to be able to use it.

Many browsers (like Chrome and Firefox) don't support it anymore, but internet explorer (for example) still does.

Instructions that worked for me:

* Install java: https://java.com/en/download/
* Go to Java Control Panel (via start menu > Configure Java) > Security > Exception Site List > Add "http://www.puzzlepicnic.com/"
* (re)start Internet Explorer, and design your puzzle.

you might want to try an older version of the Firefox browser (version 51 or lower). I use 51.0 only for the studio (https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/).
This version still contains the NPAPI plugin necessary for JAVA to work

And, after installing, don't forget to switch off the automatic updates

You could also use Firefox Portable, which can be easily installed alongside another version of Firefox, in case that's already your primary browser.

They have a version 45 release available here: https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/legacy

Hurray, this worked! One comment: I had to add "http://puzzlepicnic.com" instead of "http://www.puzzlepicnic.com/", otherwise the applet was still blocked.

Since the last Mac OS update (Big Sur) I have severe rendering issues with my Firefox workaround.
Instead of spending hours for me in fixing this workaround it would be better to get a normal working PP Studio.
Are there any plans to update Studio?

I'm afraid that there are currently no concrete plans of doing that. Sorry...
