I've noticed this bug before, but only now have I certainly figured out the cause.

If you submit a puzzle, either to the vestibule or the sandbox, and then edit the puzzle, the solution will be cleared. . . and you won't be able to save any edits to that solution. This is sad. :[

I came across a problem in the same part of the studio interface: I could not fill in a staircases puzzle solution at all, even before hitting the "update" button. I get no visible brushes, and can only fill in cells with 1's (in blue pen). Well, I can also remove them, but that is about it, and even these digits cannot be saved.

Tested under FF3.6.3 and IE8.0.6001.18904 with a 32-bit 1.6.0_20 Java applet, which works dandy everywhere else.

There's no brushes in the solution page. You just enter the solution in blue ink to match.

And as for the issue with only ones, if you edit the puzzle (or make a new one), the first click to make a square puts a square that can go from 1 to 1. Clicking again changes it to a 2 so it can go from 1-2, etc. up to at least 9 (I haven't looked to see if it goes past that). That's probably your second problem.

And for the updating thing, at least in IE I usually just click the update button about 5 times; you don't see any confirmation that it's been saved, but then when you get to step 5 the solution is usually saved.

Thanks. I hadn't realised I need to specify the range of each cell individually. Of course, this is mostly because I hadn't seen the light gray numbers in the created cells. Bad monitor, horrible eyesight and light gray numbers don't mix well - I can barely see them now that I know they're there.

So now I can actually enter the intended solution - of course, I cannot save it, probably for the same reasons as mathgrant. Still, it's one problem further down the road.

Is repeating the process from scratch (as a new problem) the only known workaround for the thread starter problem?
Is it possible to define the solution in the code box?
Would editing the code box update the UI, or does it only work one way?

Would editing the code box update the UI, or does it only work one way?

Updating the code box makes the UI for the design applet go out of sync, but it doesn't matter for the puzzle applet. It means that if you later need to edit the puzzle itself, it needs to be done through the code box as well.

Is it possible to define the solution in the code box?

When I edit the solution of my puzzles on the edit page, it shows two smaller boxes with solution strings (or is this an admin feature only?). Their formatting might not be completely obvious though.

If all fails, we can enter the solution when provided in text below the puzzle, or as a picture by email.

I designed a Masyu puzzle but could not edit solution.
I put the puzzle in my sandbox and tried to edit solution but this didn't work.

I've got the same issue. I can get solution to be remembered by the script only when I draw it while creating for the first time. Now I have a puzzle in my sandbox without solution which I can't edit nor delete.

I have this issue in Firefox 3.6 but not in Internet Explorer 8. So to edit the solution I hop on IE 8... I have no problem updating the puzzle itself in Firefox, so this seems odd.

I tried to edit my puzzles with IE 8.0.
Now I can edit my puzzles in my sandbox with IE 8 except Masyu.
I still cannot edit my Masyu puzzle with IE 8.

Just a quick question about the masyu. Are you able to draw in the puzzle applet when you open your puzzle or does it just not save the solution?

I'm asking this because it happened before that people said they couldn't put in their Masyu solution. In those cases it was always that they made the Masyu grid out of lines without an active element. These lines would normally go on the outside only. In the construction, if you click a second time on the Masyu black line, you'll see a light grey line appear over the black line. This is the active element and which you can draw the lines for the solution on.

If this is what causes the problem, I hope that fixes it. Otherwise I wouldn't know what it is.

All genres use the same applet and as far as we can tell it is implausible (although with some bugs you can never be 100% sure) that only specific genres would give these problems, with the exception of when I recently broke Fillomino.

As far as Bram's explanation does not suffice, I would sooner suspect a more random factor to be at play, not tied to specific genres.

There is a slight difference in how the applets behave in mozilla and chrome. In mozilla, the save button does not trigger anything after editing the solution. In chrome, atleast the save button appears to call a method but in the end the solution is unchanged. With IE, you can successfully edit the solution.
