In your alternate solution, the eye in the top-left is not respected. It sees the loop closer to the east side than to the south side. This is incorrect, because the black arrows point both east and south.

It was a little confusing for me as well, since the top-left eye looks through another eye.

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Blimey. I kept looking and looking at the thing, but that didn't cross my mind.
