Sometimes I solve a puzzle, get the "Correct" popup, but when I go to the next puzzle the number of solved puzzles is not incremented.
And when I navigate back to the puzzle, by using next/previous, not the back button, the puzzle is not marked as solved.

When this occurs, it happens to alle puzzles I solve from then on.
Thus, no solved puzzles are registered as such anymore.

And then, possibly after days of not logging in, it works again.
Sometimes it helps switching from http://www.puzzlepicnic.com to http://puzzlepicnic.com. or vice versa.
(Unfortunately one has to login again, and the solution(s) previously entered are stored in different cookies.)

Using Firefox 2.0.0.x (latest) on WinXP.
Possible something to do with me opening Fx with all tabs from previous session?
(Although I logout from PP and close that tab always.)

You get this effect when you are not actually logged in anymore, but an old page which shows you as logged in is loaded from the browser cache.
Just reload the page, and relogin.

It may be better if the server would tell your browser not to cache these pages.

Hmm, I wish it was that simple.

But it happens also when I just log in, open a solved puzzle (e.g. from the day before), check, "correct" (duh), next unsolved, # solved unchanged, previous unsolved, back at the puzzle I just correctly solved.

Maybe it's for the best, 'cause it tempers my addiction to this site when my stats don't get updated.
And no, I'm not going to use IE.

There is an issue in Firefox 2.* which prevents the applet from connecting to the server in certain cases. This happens when Javascript is executed on the page before the applet tries to connect to the server (when you check your puzzle). The solution does get checked (we implemented a workaround which sends the solution as a param to the applet), but the user stats cannot be updated, because the applet cannot connect to the server. We are working on resolving this problem.

I understand that in Firefox 3, this bug will probably be fixed. In the meantime, please use IE for checking your puzzles until we can fix the problem on our side.

Deleting all domain cookies also works apparently.

Even better

Although I doubt this fixes the problem for everybody.

With our last update to the site, we've managed to fix the issue where the site states the puzzle is not correctly solved when in fact it is. @Bartus: I'm using Firefox again!

Great!
So now I don't have to delete cookies anymore.
Working OK so far with Firefox3.

Thanks for the fix!

Sorry for bumping this venerable thread but the bug seems to still be present.

I use Firefox version 3.5.7 and I've installed the IE-tab plugin for pages that use Active-X or those that don't work properly in FF.

I'm experiencing the same bug as the original poster under FF so I switched to IE and it worked fine. For a while. But now it refuses to cooperate anymore. Every time I try to open any puzzlepicnic.com/* page in IE it says it can't display the requested page.

Although I have to admit that I haven't updated IE for like 6 years so that may be a part of the problem.

BTW I still have the problem once in a while. (Firefox 3.5.7)
Signing off and clearing domain cookies (with web developer toolbar) works most of the times.
(Sometimes I even need to restart Ff)

Nowadays I always make a screenshot of the confirmed solution. Well, at least with puzzles that took me a while.
That way I can fill it in again real quick, to officially register my solving voor the stats

We're working on a fix for this. As pointed out, there seems to be a problem with the number of cookies added by the puzzle applet. This number will be limited in the next release, which should prevent many of the issues mentioned in this thread. We'll keep you guys informed through this thread.

So I've updated my IE finally and it didn't help. However I did manage to get an error report. Hope it helps.

Ok, we've implemented a fix for this issue. It seems that the applet could become unstable after doing a lot of puzzles. The applet did not correctly store the puzzle progress and this causes the applet/browser hangs. From now on, the progress of the last 12 puzzles that you (partly) solved is saved (in a cookie in your current browser). After that, the progress you made with the puzzle is lost and you have to start over.

On a side note, we're planning to add a button to the applet to save your current progress on a puzzle to the server (instead of automatically saving it in a cookie). This would be a more reliable system, since you can depend on the state being saved. In the current situation, you could lose your progress after doing 12 other puzzles. Also, the progress would be saved, no matter on which computer you're puzzling.

Any thoughts/suggestions on this feature?

Thanks a lot Thierry and others! So far it works perfectly. I'll let you know if I come across any more bugs (there's still the IE issue but now that the FF problem is fixed it doesn't bother me anymore, not to mention that I seemed to be the only one experiencing that).
